Day 30: Cut; Almost Cut-Short (circa 2015)

Close call

And just like that it could have ended
Screeching, shearing, metal against metal
Screams trapped in the larynx stifled between the tiny corniculate cartilages.
Sinews of vocalis muscle stifle the terror.
Pray darkness would come like the flip of a switch
Lest  I wake in a sterile, white-walled room
the sound of mechanical ventilation pushing air through my chest.

And his Volkswagen
Full of children on the way to school
Dad is late no doubt
Would they survive?
Car seats, boosters, seat belts
Would these faux securities balance
The cu and contra cu of impact?
Sloshing brains, shearing neurons
banging against unforgiving skulls.
There is just not enough meningeal sponge to cushion the force of an 80mph impact.
Evolution hasn't kept pace with the last centuries new found speed.
Blasting my horn I angle toward the concrete divider, my foot on the brake,
I know the traffic is bearing down without even a glance in the rear view mirror.
