Journey 5 min (ish) Free Write

When the fog is low and dense
Air wet and heavy
Headlights seem useless
Wipers smear the mist.

At a four way stop
Roll down the widows
Listen for cross traffic
Honk !

Time threatens
The weather is not an excuse
Missed turns
Late and all that implies

Poor planning …Shame
Disrespect Disregard
Laziness Carelessness
Disorganization …Guilt

Is this the destination?
Is this the place to be?
Here?
Really!?

This wasn’t what was promised
The bill came due
A check was sent
Quid pro quo

And yet

The familiar roads
Are confounding
The same old turns
Entangling

Vision is deceptive
Light reflects and changes
Hearing can’t be trusted
In this disoriented state

Longing for a landmark
A familiar face, perhaps a vice
Cold comfort, yes even that
Will do

The wandering, seeking journey
No surprise amidst the distractions
In the sunshine
It always comes back to this

The senses must be stripped bare
Out of breath and out of plans
In broken solitude
Come the tears

“Help”
A prayer, barely gasped
The clouds readjust
Just enough

The center line is visible
The trees on the sidewalk too
Stop chasing light and shadows

The road always leads back to you.
